As AI finds its way into more digital systems, products, and processes, many people are wondering how it will blend with the human element to create situational awareness and contextual interaction across the spectrum of data.

Machine learning (ML) has truly enhanced every aspect of UI and UX but we still need human intuition and experience in many of these environments. The design and development process is a multidisciplinary one and a team of designers, technologists, and data scientists need to collaborate to create software platforms and user experiences that effectively blend the best of human reasoning and machine intelligence into one system built on transparency, scalability, and trust.

That’s why the next technological threshold is AI-enabled-yet still human-centered-systems and solutions to achieve this balance. The current challenges and future opportunities for digital transformation seeking to weave practical AI into their digital transformation strategies depend on putting AI in the hands of humans in order to enable “last mile” decision-making and action-taking. Such complex human-machine interactions demand a design thinking approach to complement the building up of machine learning capabilities.

The integration of and delegation to AI in various industries will undoubtedly have an impact on human careers and livelihoods. But many of the concerns surrounding AI and machine learning stem from them getting confused or conflated with scripted robotic automation. A closer look instead exposes opportunities for human and machine intelligence complementing each other to design more powerful and elegant software user experiences.

We are a long way from AI becoming a substitute for human intuition and experience. But the increasing complexity and scale of data and information that must be managed means that human-only manipulation and interpretation are no longer sufficient. In order to move beyond current limitations, we need to consider the human talent transformation that must occur parallel to any digital transformation initiative with the help of an AI or machine intelligence component. This transformation of human talents can only occur if software platforms are designed and built to be extensible and adaptive to the increasing capabilities of ML and AI.

This is where the concept of blended intelligence comes in. Designing a platform for blended intelligence requires a model that mimics the modes of human behavior and interaction within the system of machine intelligence. Designing and enabling AI systems that complement and empower human users requires a form of “digital empathy” to be encoded into their software.

In designing and building a platform for blended intelligence, we need to be driven and motivated by the creation of new digital capabilities powered by AI. Only then will people be empowered to do beyond their natural talents while remaining in control of the overall outcomes.
